As part of our Fellows Spotlight Series, this week we introduce Dr Chris Kirk CSci FCASES.

Championing athlete welfare through applied physiology and compassionate leadership

As Senior Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Physiology at Sheffield Hallam University, Dr Chris Kirk CSci FCASES has built a career rooted in integrity, and a commitment to improving the health and wellbeing of athletes, particularly those in combat sports.

Awarded his Fellowship in September 2025, Chris describes himself as “very much a new Fellow,” but his motivations were clear from the start, “I wanted to apply to demonstrate my commitment to our field and the Association as a whole… whilst also getting a feeling of my own work and career being recognised. We all like to feel special after all!”

Earning a place among those he looked up to

Chris’s journey with CASES began back in 2009. At the time, the Fellowship felt distant, almost mysterious.

“I didn’t really understand what it was,” he admits. But attending conferences and seeing respected figures being awarded Fellowship transformed his understanding,

“I came to view it as a marker of attainment… If I could have my name appear in the same list as some of the giants of our field, then I could see my own career as being successful.”

Over time, this perception evolved into something deeper:

“It’s more about demonstrating a lifelong commitment to the sport and exercise sciences as a discipline that provides genuine benefit for society.”

Today, he sees Fellowship as a platform, a way to strengthen the voice of sport and exercise sciences within the wider scientific landscape.

Shaping the future of safe and sustainable combat sports

Chris’s specialism lies in applied physiology, with a focus on combat sports such as MMA, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and boxing which require a large amount of physical impact trauma on a daily basis. “Much of this trauma is to the head which causes lifelong brain injuries related to debilitating illness and deterioration. Added to this is the extreme weight manipulation that athletes take part in.”

Through research, consultancy, and advisory roles with organisations like the International MMA Federation and the Association of Boxing Commissions, he works to:

  • develop safer training load planning and monitoring tools
  • reduce harmful weight-cutting practices
  • promote athlete health without compromising performance

This combination of scientific insight and athlete-first ethics has positioned Chris as a leading advocate for sustainable combat sports practices, helping organisations reshape rules, preparation strategies, and welfare standards.

Career highlights that reach across borders

While becoming a CASES Fellow is among his proudest achievements, Chris notes several other milestones, “Having some of my work cited in reports read at the UN General Council and influencing international governing body rules… being invited to travel to different continents… being nominated for awards by my students.”

These moments reflect not only global influence but also impact on the learners he mentors, something he values immensely.

Finding his path, and helping others find theirs

Chris is honest about early-career uncertainty, “I struggled to figure out what I actually wanted my career to be – what did I want to do, and why?”

He sees this same challenge in many of today’s undergraduates, who study sport because they love it, but don’t yet know where they fit. His own clarity came from following his curiosity:
“I focused on the things that kept my interest and that I couldn’t stop thinking about… pushing towards these areas enabled me to become more knowledgeable and skilled.”

This philosophy informs his advice to early career professionals, “Nothing is going to come quickly or easily… It’s essential that you apply your energy and focus to an area you’re genuinely excited about.”

“Once you’ve found the one you’re aiming for – go for it… do the reading, practicing and networking required to make yourself effective.”

Life beyond the lab

Despite the physical toll of years spent training in basketball, taekwondo, and MMA, Chris still practices Brazilian jiu-jitsu several times a month and aims for his black belt. Outside sport, he has a keen interest in chess, “I’m still utterly rubbish at it,” he admits, and a love of vinyl and turntablism.

His dream dinner guest list is simple and heartfelt, “Just family and friends – I’d feel like I’d be disappointed if I met some of my heroes.”

A voice for athlete welfare and professional growth

Chris’s Fellowship recognises not only his scientific contribution but his unwavering commitment to protecting athlete health and raising standards across combat sports. His journey offers an important lesson for emerging practitioners: expertise is built from passion, perseverance, and the courage to follow the questions that matter most.

Through his work, leadership, and authenticity, Dr Chris Kirk stands as a powerful role model, reminding us that sport and exercise science has the potential not just to enhance performance, but to meaningfully improve lives.
