CASES Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) Go Live

15th April 2026

The Chartered Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (CASES) has formally launched its Digital Object Identifier (DOI) publications.

The first CASES DOIs were registered in January 2026 with this milestone marking an important step in strengthening the visibility, credibility and long-term impact of CASES publications. By registering its outputs with DOIs via Crossref, CASES is ensuring that its professional and scientific contributions are permanently findable, citable, and accessible to a global audience.

What has been registered?

As part of the project, CASES is now registering DOIs for its core publications and resources, including:

  • The Sport and Exercise Scientist (TSES) – CASES member exclusive access
  • CASES Expert Statements
  • The CASES Annual Report 2024-2025
  • The AI Resource for Sport and Exercise Science
  • Other key organisational documents and reports to follow

Each registered item is assigned a unique and persistent DOI, which will appear on the published document and link directly to the official CASES version.

A DOI is a permanent digital identifier used widely across academic, professional and research publishing. Assigning DOIs to CASES publications:

  • Improves discoverability through academic databases and search engines
  • Ensures long-term access and archiving of CASES outputs
  • Enables accurate citation and referencing
  • Increases the reach and impact of CASES work internationally

Crucially, this initiative directly benefits CASES members who contribute their expertise to articles, expert statements, position stands and reports, helping ensure their work is recognised, cited and discoverable worldwide.

Strategic alignment

The DOI project has contributed to delivering the CASES 2025–2026 Operational Plan, which committed CASES to exploring whether all key publications could be assigned DOIs to support professional recognition and preserve the organisation’s legacy.

A detailed proposal was presented to the CASES Board in November 2025, following consultation with senior library staff at UK universities and the British Library. After reviewing available registration routes, Crossref was selected as the most appropriate DOI Registration Agency for CASES publications.

Commenting on this milestone, Prof Zoe Knowles FCASES, Chair, said,

“CASES has listened to its members regarding articles having DOI for searchability and correct referencing of articles and resources. We hope that this encourages members to contribute to such sources and be confident as to the access, reach and longevity of their work "

Crossref is widely used for journals, professional reports and scholarly content, and provides a robust, cost-effective solution suited to the scale and type of CASES outputs.

Implementation and governance

CASES now holds its own unique DOI prefix and has established internal processes to manage DOI assignment and metadata registration.

DOIs are being assigned to publications produced after 1 April 2025, the date of incorporation as CASES.

Supporting the profession

This initiative reinforces CASES’ commitment to advancing professional standards in sport and exercise science. By aligning its publications with international best practice in scholarly and professional communication, CASES is strengthening the organisational profile and enhancing the value of member contributions.

The DOI project represents a long-term investment in the visibility, credibility and impact of CASES work, supporting practitioners, researchers and the wider sport and exercise science community.

Further updates will be shared as additional publications are registered and new resources are released.

The CASES DOI Prefix is 10.65650 which can be used to search for registered publications on Crossref.
